Material & Care

Love your pieces, and they'll last

Here's what our jewelry is made of and how to keep each material looking its best.

Our materials

925 sterling silver

Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver alloyed with other metals, usually copper, for strength. It's the base metal of every LOVMS piece. Pure silver is too soft for everyday jewelry, and the alloy makes it durable enough to wear daily.

Gold plating

Select styles are finished with gold plating over sterling silver, and they're always labeled "gold plated." Plating is a thin layer, so it will gradually wear with regular use. How fast depends on how often you wear the piece, where it rubs, and what it's exposed to.

Lab-created moissanite

Our main stones are lab-created moissanite (silicon carbide). With a hardness of 9.25 on the Mohs scale, moissanite resists everyday scratches well. Its sparkle comes from the stone itself and doesn't fade.

Care by material

Sterling silver

  • Silver darkens naturally, a process called tarnish, when exposed to air, humidity, sulfur and some cosmetics. Wearing silver often actually helps slow it down.
  • Rub gently with a silver polishing cloth to bring back the shine.
  • For heavier tarnish, wash with warm water and mild soap, rinse, and dry completely before polishing.
  • Avoid household cleaners, bleach and chlorine, which can discolor silver.

Gold-plated pieces

  • Wipe gently with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth after wearing to remove oils and sweat.
  • Don't use silver polishing cloths, abrasive cleaners, toothpaste or ultrasonic cleaners. They can remove plating.
  • Keep plated pieces dry. Take them off before washing your hands, showering, swimming or exercising.
  • Apply lotion, perfume and sunscreen first and let them dry before putting your jewelry on.

Moissanite

  • Soak for a few minutes in warm water with a drop of mild dish soap.
  • Brush gently around the stone and setting with a soft toothbrush to remove buildup.
  • Rinse, then dry with a lint-free cloth.
  • Check your settings now and then. If a stone feels loose, stop wearing the piece and email us.

Everyday habits

  • Last on, first off: put jewelry on after getting ready and take it off before bed.
  • Take it off for: showering, swimming, the gym, cleaning, gardening and sleep.
  • Chains: fasten the clasp before storing to prevent knots, and don't pull on a chain to take it off.
  • Rings: take them off for heavy lifting or work with your hands, which can bend bands or knock stones.
  • Tennis styles: make sure the clasp clicks fully closed and the safety latch is on, if there is one.

Storage

  • Store each piece separately in its LOVMS pouch or box so harder stones don't scratch metal.
  • Keep jewelry in a cool, dry place, away from bathrooms and direct sunlight.
  • For silver, a sealed zip bag with an anti-tarnish strip helps slow tarnish.
  • When traveling, use a small, padded jewelry case.

A note on skin

Everyone's skin reacts differently. Sweat, lotions and body chemistry can affect how metals look and feel over time, and sterling silver can occasionally leave a temporary mark on skin. If you have a known metal allergy, check with a medical professional before wearing a piece. Remove any piece that causes irritation.
